The name Atacamaite is a provisional name. As Pierre Rochette noticed: "This is a newly discovered tektite-like field from Atacama desert; first finds in 2012 by M. Warner; dedicated field work in 2013 by CEREGE (CNRS/Aix Marseille University) and Pontificia Universidad Catolica de Chile; independent finds by L. Labenne in 2014".
